Yelagiri Star Party

04/05/2008 - 04:57
04/06/2008 - 04:57

As the observing season ends, this might be our last star party for a few months to come. Dr. Suresh and friends from Chennai will be joining us at Yelagiri. Landmark hotel details are being worked out by Dr. Suresh and as of now the deal with the resort is that we will be charged Rs 1300/- PER PERSON including stay and food. This amount needs to be paid to the hotel directly. Transportation to yelairi and back will be worked out once we have enough information about participants.  read more »

Hello Newcomers!

A sincere hearty welcome to all new entrants to BAS from all of us! It's great to see how BAS has reached out to several astro-freaks especially by the Sunday TOI article, and got them together under one roof. There have been several common questions by members regarding telescopes, activites, meets and other BAS activities. We hope to get all of them resolved.

Now that we have entered the monsoons (this year was bad...with only 2 clear months!) observations would evidently go down, but not for long. We would have to also concentrate on other aspects like resource-building, meetings for forming agendas, outreach sessions at various places and lots more.  read more »

Galilean Telescope

Hi all,

I'm Karthik, a newbie to the society but have lots of interest in this field.

I have a Question for all :

Can we have a simple Telescope built in home which is so-called Galilean Telescope?

If yes, then what are the components required and what are the procedures involved in constructing them.

 Please suggest.

Thank you.

Telescope Making the 16" Newtonian

Basically, i see in this scope great potential.  with the proper equipment, like  a good  German equatorial mount, and goto mechanism, a good CCD  camera attached,  i think we will be able to do more than mere amateur astronomy with it.  we should be able to split Sirius with it at high power,  and also go to depths  we  have  never been  to as far as  deep space observing and photography is  concerned.
Lets see, and hope for the best....

First step.

Hello there....I have just joined this society and really excited about it. I had attended one of the meetings at Cubbon Park, which was for the 1st anniversary of BAS's inception I was impressed by the kind of work you guys were doing. The equipment, the photography, the plannning..everything that went into it was quite tidy. I was a little apprehensive about all this, but Amar was very friendly. He showed me around and made it easier for me. I really want to contribute to all that you guys do.

Whenever I look at your posts on Yahoo Groups MU, I can't make head or tail of it. That is a really turn off for me......other wise the pictures that you sometimes post are amazing.

So I am really looking forward to spending quality time woth you guys.

That's Shashank's Orion shot from Shivanahalli used as an example.

It was fantastic outreach program for kannada medium village students of 8th and 9th standard.

I discussed the basic structure of solar system.  Solar system was illustrated in action with students participating as planets, sun and comet.

The saturn rings and comet's tail was fantastic :)

1.5 hours just passed by with these kids and the questions from all over the class, I was satisfied. I have lit the candle in their mind.

Later I had a naked eye observation session. stellar evolution and stars were discussed.
