Visit to Gauribidanur Observatory

07/05/2008 - 09:00

BAS will be organizing a visit to the Gauribidanur Observatory on Saturday. The purpose of the visit is to find out more about radio telescopes, understand the details of its construction and operation, and help us to eventually build one.

NOTE: This event is restricted to interested participants with some elementary background in Radio Astronomy, such as the working principles behind antennae, basics of astronomy, concepts of interferometry and an understanding of how data from a radio telescope is visualized, on the request of the authorities.  read more »

In memory of Prof. G.T. Narayana Rao - scientific writer and music critic

One of the shocking news I heard yesterday was "Prof. G.T. Narayana Rao is no more"

Prof. G.T. Narayana Rao a very famous science writer and music critic has always been my inspiration to read scientific books and articles written in Kannada language. His expressive hold on the language and subject with wisdom, humor and a great deal of science takes the reader to another world.

Even at the age of 82 he was very active with his activities, discussions with his students, fellow men on astronomy, science and music. There is no doubt why he has inspired many people.

He had interacted with Nobel laureates like Sir C.V. Raman in Bangalore and astro-physicist S. Chandrashekar in Chicago. He has authored biographies of famous scientists.  read more »

Better ideas, New plans

The administrative meeting on 22nd June turned out to be very eventful. A huge gathering, with lots of council members, ex-council members and other members, settled at the venue about half an hour late, a BAS banner hung on the tree.

Lots of ideas poured in, lots of new plans were discussed. So what might be in store for BAS in a few months' time? Here are extracts from the interesting bits of the meeting:  read more »

Telescope Buyers' Guide

This is a telescope buyers' guide, constructed out of one or more members' experiences. Hope that it helps many people find the right telescope for them.

There are quite a few important factors that determine the capabilities of a telescope:

Telescope Parameters

  • Telescope type
  • Aperture
  • Focal Length
  • Optical Quality
  • Type of mount
  • Motorization / Computer Control
  • Compatibility with standard eyepieces
  • Cost

We shall now see how each parameter affects the capabilities of a telescope.

Telescope Type

There are many types of telescope designs. Telescope designs can be broadly classified as:  read more »

Trip to Kaundinya National Park / Palamaner.

06/28/2008 - 11:00
06/29/2008 - 16:00

A trip pending, to explore the wilderness of the Palamaner region and the adjacent Kaundinya National Park (an Elephant Sanctuary) in Andhra Pradesh is being planned after a long time, on 28th June, Saturday.

Just 120 km East from here, enroute to Tirupati/Chennai comes this scenic location. Now being the cloudy season, we would club our astro-observations from the trekking aspect too. The night of observing if skies clear out, will be followed by paying a visit to the Sanctuary.

When the Greeks invented Avial

Carl Sagan is quite a genius, it quite intrigued me as i read the Cosmos on the way to office, it seemed to me that Carl knew a lot more of human history than God himself. To start with he believes that the world does not exist beyond Greece, oh for the uninitiated Carl Sagan is an astronomer with a magnum opus of Cosmos to his credit and the book has the first few chapters where he rambles on about history of astronomy. I cant claim i have too much of knowledge of the Greeks or their culture, however what Carl taught me in cosmos is almost unforgettable.  read more »
